Listen to us NOW and 24/7 to find out how the Office Depot Foundation Helped Two Million Students and you can too!Listen Now

Listen to Mary Wong, president of the Office Depot Foundation, explain how the National Backpack Program began in 2001 and since then has touched more than 2 million school children with free backpacks. Working with nine national charities around the country, the Foundation distributes the essential school tool to thousands of students each year. Dr. Andrew Schneider-Munoz, vice president of the Center for Youth Development at the Academy for Educational Development in Washington, D.C. calls the backpacks the "true caring connection," as they help children feel prepared, supported and organized when they start the school year. A teacher and executive director of the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Kim Bearden, echoes that observation when she sees children at her school receive the backpacks. "It's so important for kids to feel prepared; new supplies help them feel ready to learn," she says. Another long-time beneficiary of the backpack program, the Las Vegas After-School All-Stars, has received 1,000 backpacks for each of the past five years for the 6,000 children they serve. Jackie Locks, the executive director, discusses how tough it is to choose the children who get the backpacks, but stresses how each recipient also receives an invaluable sense of pride. Finally, The executive director of the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, Marshall T. Bower, Esq., talks about how homelessness and unemployment have skyrocketed in his community and that these backpacks represent a vital investment in our students, who are our future. To support the Office Depot Foundation Backpack program, simply drop your loose change into jars at the registers at every Office Depot store or visit www.officedepotfoundation.com.
